Guest Lists, Check Lists and a few last things…

sold-out

WOW is it really only three days until Plus London weekend?? The Plus London team have been planning this event since January and it’s suddenly here! As we are now SOLD OUT we thought it would be nice to sum up a few things as we know a few of you will be travelling to London over the next couple of days.

Firstly

I’m sure it goes without saying but a lot of sweat, blood and tears have been put into planning this event by five women who all have full time jobs and family lives. We have spent weekends and evenings planning and organising and smoochzing (and ok – EATING!) to try and bring you the best event we can. And we have done this all because we believe in the community and we want you to have somewhere to meet people, talk about fashion and feel good about who you are.

Now, you can’t make everyone happy – and we are truly sorry about that. We’ve had to have limits and a few rules on what we can do. This is to ensure it is the most amazing event five – willing but not professional – event organisers can do.

All we ask is that you bear with us and that if something isn’t sitting quite right with you – just drop us an email and we will try our best to accommodate you.

We really thank you for your support and appreciation with this!

Next

We’ve seen lots of tweets asking “who’s going to Plus London?” … well we thought we’d try and be helpful and publish the attendance list. So have a look and see if you can see friends or familiar names! If you are not on the list but are sure you should be please contact us on our email ASAP and we will do what we can to find out what’s happened! Don’t tweet us because we might miss it!!!

crafternoon

Crafternoon Tea!

crafternoon

As The Rolling Stones say, “you can’t always get what you want” especially when it come to plus size fashion! But that’s never stopped us and here at Plus London, we have developed ways to get what we need!

Having a few sewing skills up your sleeve opens new doors and gives you a control over your wardrobe, so for those of you with a crafty mind, here’s a heads up about the sewing workshops on Sunday.

Erin of Miss Lacy Ltd will be passing on her knowledge of making clothes for our diverse and gorgeous, shapely bodies.  Common problems like a waistband that too big, a pair of trousers or skirt that’s too long or shoulders that are too wide can be fixed with a few clever stitches.  Bring along your clothes along and she‘ll show you a few techniques to try.

Michelle will be bringing her box of pretty and shiny things to teach you how to transform clothes from blah to Boo-yah! She’ll be taking inspiration from the themes of rockabilly and punk but the only limit will be your imagination.  Dig out an unloved item, bring it along and transform it into something unique!

To fuel your afternoon of craft, Hannah from The Vintage Cake and her glamorous assistant Sheila will be selling a selection of home-made cakes and savouries – all washed down with a hot drink!

On the menu we have:

Cakes – prices starting from £2

  • Carrot Cake with Cream cheese icing
  • Coffee & Walnut cake
  • Salted Caramel brownie
  • Gingerbread cake
  • Banana Bread
  • Cupcakes:
    • Cherry Bakewell
    • Sticky Toffee with Salted Caramel icing
    • Gluten Free Raspberry frangipane.

Savouries – prices starting from £1.50

  • Sausage Rolls
  • Veggie egg frittatas

Hot drinks – price £1.50 with refills being £1 if you bring your cup back!

  • Tea – a selection of teas including fruit
  • Coffee
  • Hot Chocolate

The Brands

As we’ve mentioned previously, Plus London this year has a focus on building the community spirit so we are pleased to have a number of smaller and independent brands joining us for the Saturday. Most of them will be selling their stock.

We also have a couple of bigger brands showcasing there stock. Here’s a list of who’ll you’ll see:

1381092811

Apples and Pears

Apples and Pears are a small independent company based in Colchester, Essex. They recently celebrated their one year anniversary, and aim to cater to a sometimes forgotten younger audience with essential basics as well as up to date fashion trends. Apples and Pears range from size 14-28 and deliver in the UK and EU.

asos

ASOS Curve

ASOS Curve is one of the most loved brands amongst the plus size community and are often a main “go-to” for high fashion trends and special occasion items. The fit and quality is a high priority, clothes range from size 18-28, and can be delivered worldwide. ASOS Curve pride themselves in collaborations, and also sell items from New Look Inspire, Junarose and Carmakoma to make the online shopping experience even easier.

blackheart

Blackheart Creatives

Blackheart Creatives are the rebels with a cause. You’ll not find safe or boring jewellery here, instead you’ll find obscenities and custom made designs that will make most people blush. Made from acrylic laser cut, the designers’ precision and attention to detail make them one of the most loved specialist jewellery makers in the UK.

top_logo

Carmakoma

Carmakoma is the creation of designers Heidie and Angelica. They are passionate women who want to produce clothes for women most catwalk designers are too afraid to venture – to produce high end fashion for the plus size woman. The vision is to make clothes that fit the body and accentuate every beautiful inch of a woman’s body; and they do this with a great mix of Rock’n’Roll chic and elegant feminine pieces. Their UK sizes range from 14-26 and deliver worldwide.

curvy-kate-logo-pink-wh-bg

Curvy Kate

Curvy Kate are a Lingerie and Swimwear company, specialising in designs for the fuller bust. Their aim is to design for attitude not age and only launch pieces pre-approved by their models team – comfort with a perfect fit is the priority. They are highly popular with an array of UK retail customers, deliver worldwide and range from D-K cup.

Redbows

Redbows Boutique

Red Bows Boutique officially began in July 2011 and their pop up stall has been touring South East England, gaining momentum and learning heaps from the friendly, creative, intelligent and wonderful community of style minded plus size women they’ve met along the way. You can find gems from past decades in varying sizes. The owner can also help give you sizing and up-cycling advice.

Twisten siren

Twisted Siren

Twisted Siren is a handmade jewellery company by Alyssa. You’ll find pre-designed rings, bracelets and Necklaces, but custom items are also available to order. You’ll find lots of glitter and fun quirky pieces – ideal if you’re looking for unique well-priced goodies.

A Londoner’s guide to London

Unknown

If you’re coming to brand day, after dark and Sunday, then I’d say your weekend is pretty much covered. We’ve got loads planned to keep you entertained!

For meals and those of you that want to forgo your weekend lie-in and explore, we thought we’d make some suggestions to get you started.

Travel.

If you’re using London Transport at all, your best bet is to get an ‘oyster card’, a reusable ticket that looks like a credit card.  The idea is you put down a £5 refundable deposit then ‘top up’ the card with money (at stations and some newsagents) and ‘tap in’as you get on a bus or enter and exit a tube.  It’s easy when you know how and gives you travel at half the cash price. Keep it for your next trip or get your deposit and left over cash back before you leave town.

Eating:

Our venue is in the heart of Hoxton.  Two minutes from the venue is Stoke Newington high street, from there you can go left to Shoreditch and the infamous Brick Lane, or right to Dalston and Stoke Newington.

  • Hoxton aka ‘Little Vietnam’ has a great selection of restaurants on our doorstep.  We like ‘Viet Grill’ for their great selection, bargain prices and killer table sauces.  http://vietnamesekitchen.co.uk/
  • Anyone wanting to treat themselves could head to Beagles, next to Hoxton Station.  They do fantastic quality Modern British. http://www.beaglelondon.co.uk/
  • Maida in Shoreditch offers a selection of Indo-Chinese food from a Halal menu a 10 minute walk away http://maida-bethnalgreen.co.uk/
  • Dalston has a great selection of Turkish restaurants, and Michelle who used to live there never found a bad one!  Choose a street style café for cheap eats or try the kitsch Stone Cave http://www.stonecave.net/ Dalston also has a Nando’s. KFC, Chinese and more.

Shopping.

Here’s our top spots:

  • Camden is an alternative shoppers paradise, great for window shopping, people watching and food too.
  • Brick lane and Shoreditch at the weekend offers uber cool fashion and accessories.  It might not be great for plus size fashion but soak up an atmosphere for inspiration. They have a ton of vintage shops and small designers selling their wares on the market.
  • Between Oxford street and Marble arch tubes is high street heaven.  Just be prepared to fight for space.  Here you’ll find Evans and Primark flagship stores, a big monsoon, a big Anne Harvey, House of Frasier, Debenhams, Marks and Sparks, and all the straight size biggies.  Check out ‘Beige’ who stock designer plus size brands like Anna Scholz. http://www.beigeplus.com/shops/
  • Stratford has Westfield, a massive shopping center with Forever 21, Evans H&M and new look.
  • Covent Garden is great for shoes, boutiques and has ‘Base’ http://www.base-fashions.co.uk/

Nights out.

If you know what you like, find your thing in Time Out London.  It carries listings for most tastes.  Personally, I recommend staying away from the west end… it’s overpriced and very commercial.  If you’re staying east, there’s something for everyone in the trendy area of Dalston, Stoke Newington and Shoreditch.  We’d recommend ‘Carwash’ for party cheese (with a Jacuzzi), ‘93 feet east’ and ‘Vibe Bar’ on Brick Lane are my favourite Bar/club hangouts, and often have live performers.  ‘Cargo’ or 333 Mother Bar’ are good for serious clubbing.  Dalston Superstore’ is a young, cool, queer hangout or you could head into central London for more traditional gay and Lesbian bars and clubs.

When it comes to the end of the night, please, please call a registered minicab!  There are so many people who are uninsured and uncool trying to take you home.  Use your smartphones and find one, and book it advance if you don’t want to be left waiting in the cold.  Night buses are frequent and cheap, just use your oyster card.  London is a safe and friendly city but keep your wits about you and look after your friends.

curvissa_plus_size

Main Sponsor: Curvissa

As I mentioned last night – we’re all about the community and all of being part of one big group.

So it should come as no surprise that our second biggest sponsor is CURVISSA.

curvissa_plus_size

Curvissa is relative new on radar of plus size brands but it has made a big impact. It was one of the main sponsors at Plus North this year, and we feel really lucky to have them as part of Plus London too. It produces high quality items and although it is relatively unknown for being “on trend”, it is often the brand where you find those rare plus size gems – like mustard coloured patch elbow cardigans and tartan trousers! I have a fair few Curvissa items in my wardrobe and I have worn most of them on a regular basis (my grey cardigan is pretty much worn once a week!) and it still looks as good as new.

By being involved in Plus London, Curvissa has shown us how much it values being part of the plus size community and without the brand, Plus London would not have been able to host a whole weekend of events! In addition to that Curvissa is bringing along a pop up beauty salon The Pamper Box to ensure you all look and feel as amazing as you are!

The slots of the Pamper Box sessions are now available. If you would like a slot please email us to pluslondonevents@gmail.com putting “pamper me” in the subject line. Please state whether you would like hair or make up. We will then come back to you with a time!!

So THANK YOU Curvissa! Thank you for producing great clothes. Thank you for helping the Plus London team make it possible to have a whole weekend of fun! Thank you for your support and brilliant ideas in the planning of the event! We couldn’t have done it without you!

DAL_logo

Main Sponsor: Simply Be

The subtitle for Plus London this year is “community” and we have been really lucky to be sponsored by two of the biggest supporters of the plus size community.

DAL_logo

First up, we have our main sponsor – SIMPLY BE.

Back in 2011 when Plus London was one of the first (if not the first) plus size event to be hosted in the UK, Simply Be helped make it happen. Since then the relationship Plus London has had with Simply Be has gone from strength to strength. At Plus London 2012, Charlotte – Simply Be’s PR & social media manager – not only talked about the company, she also helped set up and clear up the event – she was part of the team. To top it off she trekked back across London in the snow!!

I am yet to meet any brand who puts so much into the community. From providing us with up to date trends, to having three bloggers design dresses for them, Simply Be cares about us. It takes on board our comments and tries to implement them where possible. The items it produces are well made and excellent quality. It has opened a host of stores across the North of England (yay for fatties of the North, boo for fatties of the South!) and these stores are not wallflowers – hiding at the back of the shopping centre – oh no! These are bright and airy, full of lush décor and photo mirrors and designed to make the shopping experience fun and comfortable. It also host regular blogger events where we get to meet celebs like Gok!

Now I could wax lyrical about the brand for hours, but I don’t have the time and I’m sure you don’t either!

However, before I go, I just want to say a heartfelt THANK YOU to Simply Be. Thank you for making Plus London possible for a third year running. Thank you for being generous enough to allow the Plus London team to make it the biggest Plus London yet. Thank you for your continued support in this event – and all the other events you help out. The plus size world of clothes would be a dull and dismal place without you.
